We may have had to deal with a budget shortfall, but Seattle’s fiscal situation is actually pretty good, according to a study recently released by the Pew Charitable Trust (and publicized by the Mayor’s office). The study focuses on Philadelphia but selects twelve other cities for comparison. Seattle was deemed in the “best fiscal situation,” as its deficit constitutes a smaller percentage of its budget than any of the other cities’ deficits do theirs. (Of course, this disregards Pittsburgh, which actually has a surplus.) The city in the worst situation? Surprise, surprise–with auto industry bankruptcies, the legacy of Kwame Kilpatrick, and $100 houses, it’s Detroit.
