AUSTRALIAN MEAT PIE COMPANY

My family and I spent two years in Cronulla, Australia, when I was a toddler; my first language was Aussie. I never did cotton to Vegemite, though I sure loved Lamingtons. All these years later, the cubelike cake squares, rolled in a fondantlike chocolate and covered with coconut, are still my favorite treat. The bakers at Burien’s Australian Meat Pie Company make a scrumptious version: The white cake is impossibly moist, the chocolate is creamy but not rich, and the coconut adds wonderful texture. Of course, the meat pies (flaky crust covering meat and cheese; meat and mushroom; meat, cheese, and bacon; etc.) are pretty fantastic as well. Ever since my dad found out you can get them on this side of the outback, I’m not really welcome in his house unless I’ve picked up a six-pack. LAURA CASSIDY
