Walking into the two-story Capitol Club on a recent Monday night, it's apparent that DJs Swervewon and 100 Proof have turned it into the go-to spot for chill hip-hop at the beginning of the week. Most of the city's most popular rappers—Fatal Lucciauno, Dyme Def, Mad Rad, etc.—come to converse on the balcony or near the bar, where cans of semi-cold Rainier are only $1. There's definitely an urban feel, but when you look around at the Spanish architecture mixed with delicate Arab touches, it's clear that hip-hop is merely a pit stop—if you walk in 24 hours later, it's all live flamenco music. Folks are dressed in their best Andalucían attire, guitars are on hand, and it sounds as if the Gipsy Kings are holding a concert upstairs. The vibe is southern Spain, except for the hummus platters. After the flamenco show ends upstairs, folks trek downstairs for a huerga (a Spanish jam session) in the intimate room just to the right of the entrance. Women in long, flowing dresses dance barefoot as a guitarist croons love songs. If you stop by any other night of the week, you're liable to get booty music, and on Thursdays there's a thrift night when DJs can only spin records they purchased for $3 or less. That's what makes the place so fun; there's a different musical atmosphere each night, but somehow it all flows together like...well, cold sangria on a hot summer night.
