“[It] seemed to me like a ballet . . . It was like writing music to an existing choreography,” said Israeli composer Betty Oliveroof the heightened acting style in the 1920 silent The Golem. For her 1997 incidental music to accompany the film, she drew on ancient Jewish folk and liturgical melodies. The result is a richly haunting, sometimes raucous score for clarinet (Laura DeLuca) and string quartet that features the wind instrument as almost a kind of protagonist, given music full of near-vocal screams, laughs, and yawps, long melancholy tunes, and dancelike duets with the strings. In a concert commemorating the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, Music of Remembrancepresents Olivero’s suite played live to the film, based on Jewish folklore, about a clay giant intended to protect the Jews of medieval Prague. Then, portending the film version of Frankenstein, the monster gets out of control, threatening the very community that created it. (Conductor Guenter Buchwald will also speak on German silent film—and play piano and violin to accompany a showing of the classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari—at McCaw Hall at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 30, an event jointly sponsored by MoR and SIFF Cinema.)
