Screwball at SAM

SAM concludes its comedy series with George Stevens’ 1943 The More the Merrier, which finds comedy, and love, in a housing shortage–just like all those kids today who hook up with the roommates they find on Craigslist. World War II basically put an end to the screwball genre. Appropriately, it’s the wartime housing crunch among government workers in Washington, DC that gives Jean Arthur a male roomie–meddling old Charles Coburn, who conspires to set her up with Joel McCrea. Coburn won an Oscar for his role as matchmaker. (NR) BRIAN MILLER
