You’re not pulling hard enough on those bootstraps, kids.Rep. Jim McDermott’s resolution to recognize January as Poverty in America Awareness Month is pure window dressing. The kind of resume-padder that usually gets all yays and no nays. So why wasn’t it passed unanimously?Because 18 House Republicans decided that there was something wrong with saying that the government’s got the backs of America’s poor. Presumably because the resolution called for an expansion of safety nets during our current recession. This is an election year. So maybe the 18 House members who voted against McDermott’s resolution are a little worried about how their votes would have played back home. But honestly, if they can’t spin the “Be Nice to Poor Kids” bill to their constituents, then they’re probably not pol enough to be re-elected anyway.
