You may recall fans of the Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs engaged

You may recall fans of the Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs engaged in a battle for the ages last season – a battle that had nothing to do with football Xs and Os.

It had to do with noise, and specifically which team’s home stadium gets louder. The Guinness Book of World Records got involved, travelling to Seattle to bestow the record on CenturyLink early in the year, then to Kansas City to deem Arrowhead the loudest stadium in all the land just a month later, and then back to Seattle to re-crown the Seahawks’ home after a late season 137.6 decibel performance by the 12th Man on Monday Night Football against the Saints. Currently, that’s where the record stands.

But if Chiefs fans have their way, that record will fall tonight when the team hosts Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. As Josh Kerns has noted on MyNorthwest.com, the Chiefs have once again invited representatives from Guinness to the game, and will even be distributing earplugs to fans as part of the promotion/gimmick.

Here’s the thing: No one gives a shit. If the Chiefs do happen to break the record tonight (and it’s funny how the record always seems to be broken when there’s a Guinness official on hand), the 12th Man should just be done with this nonsense and move on. It’s stupid.

The bottom line is both stadiums are loud. Really loud. When, as Kerns points out, you’re talking about loudness equal to a jet taking off, one or two decibels just doesn’t make a damn bit of difference. This whole charade just serves as publicity for Guinness, and a nice perk for their decibel measuring guy who keeps getting sent on trips to Seattle and Kansas City.

Let Chiefs fans have the stupid record. Considering Alex Smith is their quarterback and the team hasn’t won (or even been to) a Super Bowl since 1969, it seems like the least Seattle could do for them.
