You can add the King County Republican Party to the list of employers paying $15 an hour.

In an email that went out earlier this afternoon, the King County Republican Party solicited for door-to-door canvassers and phone callers in the lead-up to November’s election. The email indicates that “excitement for our Republican candidates at an all time high,” and to help support Republican candidates on the November ballot the party is looking to hire “motivated, personable, and an independent” workers for both full and part-time positions. The employment will last until November 4, the day of this year’s election.

Interestingly enough, the email says that those hired will make $15 an hour for their efforts … or the same minimum wage that Socialist Alternative city council member Kshama Sawant fought to pass earlier this year, much to the chagrin of many Republicans.

In fact, in a blog post posted to the King County Republican Party’s website on June 2 – the day Seattle’s minimum wage ordinance was passed – Julie Spatacean wrote: “The overall lesson to the ordinance’s passage? Mayor Murray and all the members of the Seattle City Council operate without even the most basic understanding of business.”

Today, King County Chair Lori Sotelo tells Seattle Weekly that her organization has paid $15 an hour, “or more,” to canvassers for “several election cycles now.”

“The advertised rate of pay was an internal decision based on what we believed to be fair compensation for the job requirements,” Sotelo explained when asked whether Seattle’s $15 an hour minimum wage movement had any impact on the job listing.

So there you have it.
