We may never fix the viaduct or expand the 520 bridge, but the year-round water taxi is approved, along with continuance of the Vashon Island ferry, and five additional demonstration water fleet routes, beginning with a taxi from Kirkland to the University of Washington campus.This morning, the council, wearing their Ferry District Board hats, voted eight to one to impose a 5.5 cent tax on every $1,000 of assessable property in King County. They estimate the additional tax burden on the owner of a $400,000 home at about $22. Reagan Dunn was the lone hold-out. A supporter of Proposition 1, Dunn is also the executive director of the Regional Transportation Improvement District. His staff didn’t immediately return a call to explain why he opposed raising taxes for transit in this instance. Chris Arkills, legislative aid to councilor Dow Constantine, says he expects to see the water taxi running year round starting in the fall of 2009, possibly the spring of 2010. He says repairs to winterize the docks will be needed before they can take over operation from Argosy.
