Thus far, all Palin’s picks have been turkeys. That’s Tim Egan’s contention. And the Seattle author has a point.Writing in The New York Times, Egan makes note of the “car wrecks on the Palin highway.” A pile up that includes a number of candidates whose policy positions seem to directly contradict their actions.Front and center is Clint Didier, the Patty Murray-challenger who got the Palin stamp of approval last week. A few days before the Seattle Times revealed that the fiscally conservative farmer who rails against excessive government spending has also been the recipient of hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal subsidies. Before Didier came Vaughn Ward of Idaho, who plagiarized a Barack Obama campaign speech and referred to Puerto Rico as a separate country. He got trounced in Tuesday’s Republican primary, despite a six-to-one fundraising edge. Then there’s Palin’s pick for Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, who’s currently fighting off allegations from a conservative blogger that she slept with him. And the former C.E.O. running for the Senate in California who “pledged to ‘stop multi-million dollar payouts and golden parachutes’,” yet left Hewlett Packard with $45 million despite laying off 20,000 workers. On Tuesday, a day before making his candidacy official, Rick Anderson speculated that by challenging Patty Murray without Palin’s backing, Dino Rossi was effectively taking on two of America’s strongest female politicians at the same time. However, given her track record thus far, it looks as if he might actually prefer being snubbed by Palin, lest he become just another bit of wreckage worth rubbernecking.
