This week, Rick Anderson tell the alarming story of how local law enforcement agencies have monitored and, in some cases, preemptively arrested anti-war protesters in Washington.Rick’s story starts with what the State Patrol deems to have been a routine traffic stop in Grays Harbor county–of an activist who happened to be on his way to a demonstration. The government eventually settled a lawsuit alleging a “false arrest,” but the question of what kind of information-sharing is going on was only heightened by the exposure of an Army operative who was working undercover among the protesters. As Rick reports, the military may have worked in concert with local authorities to crack down on the peaceniks, in violation of federal law.
