This is the portrait of Bill and Melinda Gates (see larger view below), commissioned by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in D.C. and unveiled this morning. The New York Times

says “Bill Gates appears supremely self-assured…[and] Melinda looks confident.” They should. The paper notes that the gallery’s portrait by Jon Friedman “is one of the first” of someone either not a president or not dead “to be commissioned and completed.” It’s quite an exception and an honor, and it would probably be cynical of us to point out that former Gates Foundation director Patty Stonesifer is chair of the Smithsonian board and that the Gates’ foundation has, in the past two years, given the Smithsonian $20 million in gifts and grants. So forget we mentioned it.
