There is a Nike-sponsored establishment in Beaverton, Ore. called the Joe Paterno Child Development Center. Needless to say the place was dubbed long before Mr. Paterno was accused by a grand jury of turning a blind eye to child rape. KOIN News reports that Nike (which is a sponsor of Penn State football) is biding its time in light of the horrid scandal involving former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who was just arrested and charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse involving eight young boys. Paterno, Penn State’s football coach and an absolute legend in his field, was supposedly informed by a graduate assistant in 2002 that he’d witnessed Sandusky raping a young boy in Penn State’s shower room. But instead of telling police, Paterno simply told Athletic Director Tim Curley and called it a day, never following up to make sure Sandusky was brought to answer for his actions.Paterno was fired from his job last night, prompting riots by students. As for Nike, the Oregon-based company released this statement on whether it would change the name of its Child Development Center, being that its namesake may have helped facilitate the sexual assault of multiple children.Nike:”Our relationship with Penn State remains unchanged. We are deeply disturbed by the claims brought forth in the indictments. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
