The Seahawks’ offense and defense may have proved toxic in the team’s 42-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, but its practice site in Renton is, at least, no longer considered so. The PI

reports Saturday that the Washington State Department of Ecology removed the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton from its list of hazardous sites after the nasty creosote contaminants left over from its previous owners were finally found to have been sufficiently cleaned. The 19-acre site is home to four practice fields–three grass and one turf, the latter of which is housed in a massive airplane hangar style building. It was formerly home to a wood creosoting plant and the chemicals left behind (especially in the southern end) had put the site on the state’s list of of contaminated parcels for years. Now, since the de-listing took place before Sunday’s game, that makes it the first loss that Hawks can’t chalk up to practicing on a lethal lawn. Those five previous losses: totally the field’s fault.
