The hoopla surrounding Burn a Quran Day — a Florida church’s book-torching event scheduled for this Saturday, 9/11 — is something beyond ridiculous. A publicity-seeking pastor and his tiny congregation have managed to turn one little backwoods bonfire into an Event of Great Importance, requiring public denouncements from the President of the United States. The only thing that could make it more ridiculous would be a comment from our own, locally controversial God-ite, Ken Hutcherson.Speaking from his office at the Antioch Bible Church where he’s pastor, Hutcherson said he didn’t necessarily agree with the decision to burn the Qurans — “I don’t think it’s the smartest thing in the world to do, I really don’t.” — but he was less interested in the stunt than in the reaction to it, and how he said that reflected America’s oversensitivity to Muslims.”We should be a lot more cautious with Muslims,” he said. “We’re too oversensitive. We are building up their strength.”Obviously, calling up Hutcherson and asking for his opinion on any controversial matter related to religion is quote-hunting, an exercise in finding and highlighting the most outrageous thing said by an oft-enraging, gay-hating, Rush Limbaugh wedding-officiater. And on that note he didn’t disappoint.”They hate us. They want to kill us,” he said of the roughly 1.5 BILLION people in the world who identify as Muslim. “They want us eliminated just like they want Israel eliminated. We’re infidels. If you read the book of peace, the Quran, you’ll find out what they must believe. It is not a religion of peace. The bible is a book of peace (Editor’s Note: !!!), not the Quran.”The man who just said that still doesn’t think it’s smart to burn a Quran. Mull it over, tiny little Florida congregation everyone wishes would just go away.
