The countdown to Microsoft’s Oct. 22 launch of Windows 7 now stands at seven days. But test versions of the operating system are out there, and more reviews are coming in. After Walt Mossberg’s favorable assessment, tech site CNET has opted for a more quantitative approach. The site compared Win 7 with Mac’s OX 10.6 (aka Snow Leopard) and judged the latter was speedier except for gaming. Curiously, the tests were run on a Mac. And as for the gaming gap, let’s remember that Mac is a small player in that sector compared to MSFT, whose Xbox platform is also huge. CNET’s Dong Ngo compared the two platforms on a MacBook Pro using Boot Camp (which allows you to run Windows). Among his conclusions: “Performance-wise, Windows 7 is probably a better choice if you are a gamer (there are more games developed for Windows, anyway), even on Mac hardware.” But, he notes, you gotta pay a premium for the privilege of running two different operating systems on one machine: “If money is not an issue–and it definitely is for most of us–you should get a Mac anyway. It’s the only platform, for now, that can run both Windows and OS X.”
