The Army has yet to complete its long-awaited report on Fort Lewis double agent John Towery, who infiltrated and spied on anti-war protest groups. But in the mysterious way that Elvis left the room, Towery has left the fort. Joint Base Lewis-McChord officials, who had stood behind Towery after he was exposed and accused of breaking U.S. law, won’t say why he departed. Base spokesperson Catherine Caruso told

The Olympian that Towery wasn’t fired, and gave up his job with the Fort Lewis Force Protection’s fusion center – the base intelligence operation – in mid-May. The fusion center’s role in infiltrating protest groups was detailed in a June SW cover story. Says the Olympian:In July, Lewis-McChord announced that it had completed an investigation into Towery’s alleged activities. Caruso said Tuesday that the base can’t release the results of its investigation because of the pending litigation involving Towery, a former Army employee, and [Tom] Rudd, Towery’s former boss, who still works at Lewis-McChord.Both are named in lawsuits filed by attorney Larry Hildes on behalf of the infiltrated protest groups, alleging civil rights violations by the Army and the cities of Olympia and Tacoma. Former U.S. Attorney Mike McKay is representing Towery in the lawsuits.
