Ten years after 9/11, why does Sealy, the mattress company famous for its talking-sheep commercials, still have the World Trade Center on the side of some of its trucks?Walking to work yesterday, I saw one of said trucks slowly pass. Two things instantly grab your eye–the backside of a woman in a blue nightgown, and the skyline of New York City, complete with the Twin Towers. It jarred me so much that I stopped in the middle of the street. I visited the World Trade Center in July 2000, and for me, like most other Americans, the towers are now an emotional symbol. I fumbled to pull out my camera, but the truck drove off.It seemed, possibly, that Sealy was too cheap to change their trucks, so I gave them a call. Here’s their official statement, relayed via a spokesperson:”The advertisement is not current; in fact, our most recent national campaign focuses on supporting all the living that occurs in bed. We certainly understand the sensitivity around this topic as we, too, are reflecting on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. To that end, the last thing we would want do is offend, and we deeply regret if this image caused undue distress to our consumers.”No words yet on whether the company plans to remove the image from their trucks, though that would be the right thing to do.
