Sure it’s cute, but what’s the air pollution score?Saving the planet comes up at regular intervals in local races since, apparently, it’s something we Emerald City dwellers care about quite a lot. And the mayor’s race is no exception. Joe Mallahan caught heat when he admitted in a campaign forum earlier this month that he drives his Toyota Prius the six blocks between his Wallingford home and his Eastlake office. And at one of his town halls last weekend, someone asked Mike McGinn how he’d arrived at the Columbia City branch of the Seattle Public Library and he replied by saying he rode his electric hybrid bike (apparently an embarrassment to his children) downtown then put it on the train. He did admit that someone would probably drive him around for much of the day.So just for fun, we here at the Daily Weekly thought we would find out just how green the candidate’s garages actually are. By giving the names of both the candidates and their spouses as well as their current addresses to the state Department of Licensing, here’s what we learned:Joe Mallahan has a 2005 Toyota Prius and a 2007 Volkswagen Beetle (which appears to be a convertible, says DOL spokesperson Brad Benfield). According to fueleconomy.gov, the Prius gets a combined city/highway 46 miles per gallon. It has an air pollution score of 8 (on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being very good). The Beetle gets a combined 22 miles per gallon and has a score of 6.Mike McGinn has his electronic bike and his wife has a 2001 Honda Odyssey. The Odyssey gets 18 miles per gallon and has a rather dismal air pollution score of 1. Of course, there are factors like how often the cars are driven, what goes into making them, how many people ride in the car, etc. But the next time you find the candidates talking about making Seattle more green, now you can ask how they plan to improve the gas mileage of their own garages.
