Stott-Smith admitted to forcing her kids off the bridge.Amanda Stott-Smith apparently never got over her divorce. In 2008, she and husband Jason Smith separated. A year later a judge gave him custody of their two kids. One night last May, the 32-year-old called her ex-husband and left a distraught voicemail. “You’ve taken my joy away,” she said. “Why have you done this to me?”Around midnight, hours after she’d left the message, Stott-Smith’s 7-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son Eldon fell 75 feet from the Sellwood Bridge into the Willamette River. A couple living near the river heard the splash and hopped into their boat. But when they finally reached the kids, a half-hour after they’d plunged into the freezing cold water, Eldon was already dead. The next day police tracked Stott-Smith’s cell phone to a Portland parking garage. There, an officer grabbed her by the wrists to keep her from jumping from the ninth floor.Yesterday Stott-Smith plead guilty to aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. Charges that require a minimum of 35 years in jail. The girl has since recovered and lives with her dad.
