Steven Well killed his 64-year-old landlord back in July. He brutally stabbed her nearly two dozen times in the foyer of his Everett apartment complex, because she supposedly wouldn’t bring him a copy of his lease. Steven Well is also batshit crazy. And when someone’s crazy enough, they stop being guilty of crimes. That makes Well about as crazy, or crazy lucky, as they come, because on Thursday he was acquitted of the murder of his landlord, Judith Garcia, for reasons of insanity–the fourth time he’s been handed such a verdict. As the Herald

reports on Thursday, most of Well’s adult life–he’s 59-years-old–has been spent in and out of mental institutions. He’s a paranoid schizophrenic and, at one point, spent 20 years locked up in Western State Hospital for stabbing his then-landlady. At the time he apparently told doctors that it was because she was trying to “invade my brain.”Then, he was found not guilty because he was too insane to have known what he did was wrong–the same outcome that happened on two other instances, previous to Thursday’s ruling, including one in which he attacked a housemate with a hammer. It was a error from the previous landlady conviction that eventually set Well free and allowed him to move into the apartment complex where he would later kill Garcia. Basically, years after his first conviction, Well argued that he’d never been informed that he could appeal that decision. And after a long legal fight he was set free with the condition that he take his meds and go to counseling. Well later quit taking those meds and the judge on Thursday concluded that it was a direct cause of him going “off the deep end” and stabbing Garcia. He’s now headed back to Western State indefinitely. A place he seemingly never should have left.
