Smith’s captors also saved his life.Darrell Smith may not know it yet, but he just inadvertently scripted the opening scene of the next “Dukes of Hazzard” remake. On Saturday, the 39-year-old man got busted for robbery in Ephrata. But jail didn’t suit Smith. So sometime before his Monday hearing he hatched a plan.Feigning illness, Smith convinced corrections officers to take him back to jail instead of court. Then he bolted.Sprinting through downtown, the fugitive lucked into an old grain truck with keys nearby. He drove 20 miles with deputies in hot pursuit before pulling off the road and, according to a trailing cop, turning that “big old truck into a dune buggy.”When police finally caught up with Smith he was out of the truck and trying to swim his way to freedom across a pond. But his handcuffs and jumpsuit made staying afloat difficult.”He started yelling, ‘Help, I’m drowning!’ ” a deputy told KOMO.The cops undressed, jumped in and pulled Smith to shore. He then thanked them for saving his life. Despite the fact that his escape attempt has earned him a whole new set of felony charges.”You can’t make this stuff up. It’s a made-for-TV movie,” said Grant County Undersheriff John Turley. Except that, unlike Smith, in the movies the Duke boys always managed not to get caught.
