Since 1962, Seattle has dreamed of space. That year, we even went so far as to erect a giant needle in the middle of town with a flying saucer thing on top. Fast forwarding to 2010, we got closer to space when James Cameron used all his Avatar money to invest in Redmond’s Planetary Resources, one of the world’s first asteroid mining companies.

Soon, the Seattle-area may continue its spacey legacy thanks to SpaceX, one of the world’s leaders in private space transportation technologies (i.e. rockets and spaceships).

According to Geekwire, the company has filed for a Washington State business license that lists a Bellevue address, and according to LinkedIn, a number of former Microsoft employees have been listing their employers as SpaceX in the past month. Many among them were Xbox developers and programmers in particular, which matches up with SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s past statements on the role video game developers have played for the company:

“In gaming there’s a lot of smart engineering talent doing really complex things. [Compared to] a lot of the algorithms involved in massive multiplayer online games…a docking sequence [between spacecraft] is actually relatively straightforward. So I’d encourage people in the gaming industry to think about creating the next generation of spacecraft and rockets.”
