Residents of SHARE’s Safe Haven shelter have finally found a taker. Goodwill Industries of Seattle has offered space to the shelter on the second floor of its three-story Community Learning Center on South Dearborn Street and Corwin Place South. The shelter has been looking for a home since last spring when the INS building in SoDo, where they’d been staying for three years, was sold to a local investment group. They’ve been sleeping at St. James Cathedral on First Hill since June, but were due to get booted from there soon. The site, however, like the INS building, will be a temporary home. The Goodwill property is slated for a major mixed-used redevelopment next year. Safe Haven’s existence there will be reevaluated after three months. Meantime, planning efforts for Nickelsville (part shantytown, part protest) continue. The overnight building effort is still expected to take place sometime before the end of September.
