Ready and willing to do Google’s bidding. After Google announced it would install fiber-optic internet in a number of trial cities, we wondered if Seattle would apply to be one of its high-speed guinea pigs. Wonder no more.Today Mayor Mike McGinn announced he had enrolled the city in what is sure to be a nationwide beauty contest. And for the talent portion of the evening’s festivities, McGinn brought out the goods: We’re tech-savvy, own 100,000 of our own poles (no jokes please) and sorta, kinda, already have a plan in place to make internet a public utility. That Seattle responded to Google’s call for applicants less than 24 hours after it was made is a good sign. But on a day when we were reminded of the city’s unfortunate habit of talking in circles, there is some reason for pause. Check out this line from the press release: McGinn has already created an internal city government task force of utility and technology leaders to create a plan for realizing this plan.Oh, Seattle. Even your plans have plans.
