Pity the KVI listener hoping to win a grand.Back in 2007, promotions coordinator Ryan Elizabeth Keeley was responsible for picking the winners in a contest run by her employer, radio station KVI.The gist of the contest — called the “Secret Listener Salute” — was that each day Keeley would pick three random names from one of two lists. When the person heard their name they had 30 minutes to call the station and win $1,000.This was one of those contests that came with the disclaimer that reminded listeners that friends and family of KVI employees were not eligible. Thus giving them a fair shake. Except that, according to prosecutors, that wasn’t the case when Keeley was picking names.Prosecutors allege that Keeley picked names of friends or friends of friends and then took back a cut of the prize, in some cases as much as half. This happened 14 times, they say, over a period of two months. The alleged scam was busted a year later when one of Keeley’s alleged co-conspirators told her replacement at KVI that the contest was rigged. Keeley reportedly has no criminal history in Washington. Now 26 years old, she allegedly told the Seattle police detective in charge of the investigation it was a stupid thing to do and she wants to take responsibility.Keeley left the station in July of 2007. She is charged with first-degree theft.
