Part of the problem of writing about the historic murder of Ed Pratt for this week’s SW was that few today remember he was the assassinated leader of Seattle’s Urban League in 1969 (though it helped that KING-TV followed up on the story last night in a piece that includes some historical footage such as crime scenes and Pratt working the streets). But as these photos from CentralDistrictNews.com show, Pratt’s image recently was literally erased from public view in the CD. Tom Fucoloro reports that Pratt’s mural on the wall of the building housing Thompson’s Point of View, at 23rd and E. Union, was painted over after taggers marred it with graffiti. “Each time the mural was tagged, a little more of it had to be covered up.” He says the mural was painted by two Garfield students in the 1990s, and included African American leaders Madame CJ Walker, Malcolm X and Pratt. Fortunately, there’s a plan for a new mural, according to Ian Eisenberg, who owns the property. The current brown surface is preparation for the mural.
