Our reader says the city streets aren’t safe.Reader just a lurker responds to Nightclub Owners Want Politicians to Be ‘Urbanist’, Just Without the Panhandling.”I’m not sure how I feel about the ordinance or if it would indeed have any real effect. Opposing it and ridiculing its supporters seems to be in fashion now for some writers to show their social justice creds. But denying there’s a real problem is just plain ridiculous.””I go to clubs in other parts of town. There are clubs downtown I’ve been to and might want to visit more frequently, but every time the first consideration that comes to my mind is always about whether I want to deal with the urban zoo outside. Come on, you’ve got crackheads literally camped out on the sidewalk a few feet from the entrance at some places. And it’s not some vagrant with a sign and a cup, it’s indeed aggressive. Walking just a few blocks from your parking lot downtown means you’re sure to run a gauntlet of street people shouting after you to ‘hey-hey-stop, got a cigarette, got a dollar, I wanna talk to you, buy this junk from me, let me suck you into some kind of scam’ bullshit. I’m a GUY and it unnerves me to walk alone down there. I can imagine what it’s like for some girl dressed in club clothes.”I have great sympathy for the bouncers and club staff that work downtown. They generally do well with keeping it civilised inside the clubs but they’re in a very difficult position with what’s going on outside. But with the ‘good neighbor’ licensing requirements the city wants to make the clubs responsible for that too. A no-win situation.”
