Mike Braae’s bizarre, violent 2001 crime spree left two women dead, two raped and one forever brain damaged. Former Weekly staff writer Aimee Curl’s cover story “Cowboy Mike: The Ladykiller,” memorably chronicled how Braae used karaoke to seduce his victims and survived a 40-foot, authority-eluding jump into the Snake River. Now, nearly a decade after he was caught, the families of Braae’s victims have received their final bit of justice. The four families recently agreed to a $6.4 million settlement with the Department of Corrections. The agency was supposed to be keeping an eye on Braae, but managed to lose him in the shuffle because of a paperwork mix-up.Before his spree, Braae had already proven himself a dangerous man. He’d racked up more than 40 different convictions in under 10 years.”If the DOC had been doing its job reporting to the court all of the serious crimes he was committing during his parole, they could have locked him up,” says attorney Blaine Tamaki.Braae was convicted in 2008 and is currently serving a 48-year prison sentence.
