Mayoral candidate Norman Sigler is none too pleased about Olympia’s formal endorsement

Mayoral candidate Norman Sigler is none too pleased about Olympia’s formal endorsement of the plan to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel. What he’d prefer to see are commuter rail lines serving Northwest and Southwest Seattle. If that plan sounds familiar, that’s because Seattleites once voted for such a line, and it was called the Monorail. Anyhoo, Sigler’s specific beefs with the waterfront tunnel, per a press release from his office, can be found below/after the jump.”The people voted down the Mayor’s cut and cover tunnel option,” Sigler said. “They also voted no on rebuilding the existing structure. The tunnel will only benefit persons travelling through downtown Seattle and not the majority of people using 99 entering downtown for work or pleasure.”Sigler further criticizes the legislature’s proposal to force cost overruns on downtown Seattle property owners. “It would make more sense to have the waterfront property owners and a toll for tunnel users to cover any overruns. This is a state highway which serves the Port of Seattle, which provides goods to every part of our state,” said Sigler, adding the cost for replacing the viaduct should be a statewide burden. Still, he insists “the best solution to Seattle’s transportation situation is to partner with Sound Transit and construct trains serving from Southwest Seattle (West Seattle) through Northwest Seattle (Ballard and neighborhoods north).”
