Jolly Old Nickels

While McGinn struggles, Nickels finds fun on Facebook.

Maybe it’s just the lighting, but Mike McGinn’s eyes are puffy and tired in the video of his State of the City address, which he gave last week. And no wonder.

“Our budget is challenged by the state of the economy. Human-services needs are increasing citywide. There are critical infrastructure and transportation needs that are unmet,” McGinn said in his opening remarks. What a downer.

Meanwhile, former mayor Greg Nickels is keeping us all abreast of how much fun he’s having at his Harvard fellowship through a very active Facebook account (’cause that’s what the college kids do). “The end of the first week of orientation! This afternoon an ice cream social with returning students. I do hope it’s inside though,” he announced on Feb. 5.

Here’s a look at the State of Nickels compared with his successor at City Hall:

• In his speech, McGinn noted that 9.2 percent of Seattleites are unemployed and more people are seeking help at area food banks.

• Nickels had his first Facebook food fight. “Just got hit with a Latte. Stop the madness!” he declared on Feb. 11.

• McGinn made enemies of a couple hundred city employees when he threatened to fire them in a desperate attempt to resolve the budget problem.

• Nickels added more than 40 new friends this month, and changed his profile picture to one of himself with Apolo Anton Ohno.

• McGinn has received an unending stream of criticism over everything transit-related.

• Nickels updated his status on Feb. 13 to this: “It’s time to shift out of neutral on our national energy policy! Oh, and happy Valentine’s Day!” Twenty-two people promptly clicked the “like” button.
