Jed Waits at Seattle Pacific University, where he met his eventual victim Jennifer Paulson. After shooting and killing Jennifer Paulson outside Birney Elementary School in Tacoma the morning of Feb. 26, Jed Waits jumped into a tan sedan and drove off. A Pierce County Sheriff Deputy stopped him outside a daycare. According to the Sheriff’s office, Waits got out of his car, gun in hand. “We had a short gun battle with him and he lost and died,” Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Ed Troyer told SW in an interview shortly after the shooting. But today Stacey Mulick at the Tacoma News Tribune reports that the Pierce County Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was in fact suicide. According to Mulick, Waits was shot twice by Pierce County deputy Eric Honeycutt. But apparently Waits had also turned his own gun on himself. An ME’s office representative says the details of the report are confidential, but that the conclusion is Waits died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
