It’s hard enough running a non-profit cinema without the roof caving in, but the U District’s tiny, venerable Grand Illusion Cinema is used to facing challenges. Usually they’re financial, but last week they turned structural. The place had to close on short notice last Saturday owing to a sagging room, which is now being replaced. As a result, the second week of its Kate Hepburn retrospective had to be interrupted. But the present hope is to reopen Friday for the Japanese film Honey and Clover. We’ll try to keep you updated here and on our film page. And you can call the GI’s info-line at 523-3935 and visit its Web site. The 70-seat indie cinema has been operating in the same location for 37 years, under new management for the last three. Let’s hope it celebrates many more birthdays under a new, dry roof.
