It was around 6:30 p.m. last night that police finally gave in to the demands of the immigration reform advocacy group OneAmerica. Its members had been sitting in a circle at the intersection of Second and Madison for three hours in protest of Arizona’s immigration law and calling for federal reforms. But their specific aim yesterday, as Nina Shapiro reported, was handcuffs. Ultimately 23 people got their wish.Once the cops started making arrests, the seated protesters stood, linked arms and started swaying back and forth singing “This Little Light of Mine.”Never have arrests been carried out more gingerly. Dozens of cellphone and hand-held cameras were pointed at the officers. And after a racial slur and a punch to the face were caught on tape, they weren’t taking any chances. Two officers would walk up to one person in the circle. One would read the Miranda Rights from a small card before they carefully took both of the arrestees’ wrists and pulled her away to cheers from the crowd. The protesters were arrested for “pedestrian interference,” says SPD spokesperson Mark Jamieson.SPD is getting its own footage now.Not willing to let the onlookers get all the video credit, a third police officer video taped each arrest.None of the protesters were booked in the King County Jail, Jamieson says. But OneAmerica spokesperson Charlie McAteer says eight people are still waiting to be released from police custody. Jamieson says it will be up to the City Attorney’s office to decide if any charges are filed.
