Island Dog AdventuresDog trainer to the stars Mark Stover is missing and presumed dead.Mark Stover built a name for himself in the dog-training world with his alpha-male attitude and ability to turn bad dogs good. Stover’s reputation was nearly as impressive as his client list, which included Eddie Vedder, SW contributor Krist Novoselic, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and Ichiro Suzuki. On October 29th, Skagit Island police called to Stover’s home found his dog, Dingo, bleeding from gunshot wounds and a bathroom that smelled suspiciously of bleach. Hours later Stover’s station wagon was found ditched at a local casino with bloody fingerprint smears on the interior.Linda Opdycke, Stover’s ex-wife, called police to her house when she found out about her ex-husband’s disappearance. She claimed to have nothing to do with it. But when authorities left her boyfriend was in handcuffs, soon to be charged with Stover’s murder.A lawyer for Michiel Oakes, Opdycke’s 41-year-old boyfriend, says his client was afraid of Stover and calls the disappearance a “big whodunit.” But Oakes’ not-so-suave actions suggest otherwise.A day before Stover was last seen alive, a neighbor called cops to report a trespassing. Two cars, one belonging to Oakes and the other Stover, were parked side-by-side with a sheet of plastic between them. When a cop later pulled him over as he was driving away from the scene, Oakes said he had just stopped to make a phone call. The deputy noted that he had dog hair on his sleeve and blankets laid down in the back seat. The next day, when police arrived at Opdycke’s house, Oakes told them he was going to his car to get some medicine. Instead, he went outside and threw a plastic bag over an embankment.Because Oakes may be new at this whole destroying evidence gambit, his toss didn’t go very far. And it also caught the attention of the cops. When the officers found the bag they realized Oakes had good reason to want to get rid of it. Inside was a .22-caliber pistol and the faint smell of household cleaner.Dingo the dog survived his injuries. But Stover has yet to found.Police are searching a nearby channel after a cadaver dog indicated a body might be found there. Until then, Oakes is being held on $5 million bail.
