In four weeks, 21-year-old Brittainy Labberton will give birth to her third child. But what should be a joyous occasion has King County prosecutors freaked out. As one told a judge yesterday, according to The Seattle Times, “This is a train wreck; we all see it coming.”What the county fears is a repeat of Labberton’s first two attempts at motherhood. Following the birth of her second child in August of 2008, Labberton says she became depressed and suicidal, yet refused to take medication. The 5’5”, 90-pound woman feared getting fat. And seemed to project those fears onto her kids, who, as everyone knows, are supposed to be a little chubby.Labberton’s younger daughter was first taken from her custody after she only gained one pound in her first two months of life. Then, after a supervised visit in which she told the foster parents her kid looked fat, the baby got diarrhea. Tests later revealed that Labberton had fed the child laxatives.Labberton’s older daughter, then two, was also taken from her care. Her foster parents say that when they first brought her home, she ate so fast she choked. There’s good reason to believe this pattern is repeating itself now, as Labberton has already been hospitalized once during her latest pregnancy for not eating enough food to properly nourish her child. And there’s little to suggest that she or her husband Samuel — who Labberton describes as having a weight problem — have the resources to take care of the kid, as they’re currently homeless. But Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ramsdell denied the prosecution’s unusual request that the hospital take Labberton’s baby away from her after delivery. Instead, he ordered that both she and her husband report the baby’s birth immediately to the social worker handling their other cases, or face charges of contempt. The Labbertons have already pleaded guilty to charges of criminal-misconduct. They could face up to a year in jail at their September sentencing.
