In a matter of days, 84-year-old Seattleite Dorli Rainey has become the face of a movement. But when she addresses Occupy Seattle for the first time since being pepper sprayed by Seattle police, she’ll be telling them to stop talking about her and start talking about the issues.”My face is everywhere,” she tells Seattle Weekly. “But I want to redirect that energy away from me and back to the issues at hand. This is about the issues, not about me.”Rainey, a longtime lefty activist and former mayoral candidate, was pepper prayed along with dozens of other protestors in an incident that the P-I’s Joshua Trujillo immortalized in a photograph that’s now become nothing short of iconic. Protesters gathered in the intersection of 5th Avenue and Pine Street after marching from their camp at Seattle Central Community College in support of Occupy Wall Street. Many refused to move from the intersection after being ordered by police. Police then began spraying pepper spray into the gathered crowd hitting dozens of people. A pregnant woman was taken from the mele in an ambulance after being struck with spray. Since the photograph was published Rainey has appeared on Countdown with Keith Olbermann been referenced by Stephen Colbert, and has been featured–either quoted as a source or shown via photographs–in publications nationwide.Around 2 p.m. on Saturday Rainey says that she’ll take the stage at the Occupy rally near Westlake Park and her message will be such:”It’s time to stop talking about me,” she says. “We need to redirect the energy that’s been put onto celebrity and start talking about what’s important. Our country’s system of government is completely broken. And we need to stand up and fight for the issues, not for me or any one person.”
