Image SourceBuoyed by two defensive touchdowns and another beastly performance by Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks kept their slim playoff hopes alive by pummeling the Chicago Bears. The UW men’s basketball team, meanwhile, suffered a humiliating defeat at home against South Dakota State.During the first half yesterday, the Seahawks looked like the atrocious Seahawks from the first half of the regular season. The Bears defense was content to crowd defenders near the line of scrimmage to keep Lynch from breaking any big runs. That left Tarvaris Jackson lobbing aimless passes off his back foot (as he is wont to do), and the boys in blue trailing 14-7 at the midway point. But with Caleb Hanie at the helm for the injured Jay Cutler and starting running back Matt Forte also out with an injury, da Bears could not move da ball either. Nor could they keep possession. The Hawks forced five turnovers (four interceptions and one fumble), highlighted by behemoth defensive tackle Red Bryant taking an errant Hanie pass 20 yards the other way for six points. The 326-pound hulk high-stepped into the end zone like he was Deion Sanders. “That’s a fat kid’s dream right there,” Bryant quipped after the game. All told, the Seahawks scored 31 unanswered points in he second half, giving them a 38-14 victory. Now the Hawks are two games out of a wild-card berth with two games remaining. They need to keep winning the rest of the way, and losses from the Falcons and Lions. But, nonetheless, they have improved to 7-7 and are clinging to a slim 4 percent chance of making the postseason. Barring a complete bed-shitting in the final games, the season has to be considered a success.Speaking of shitting the bed, the UW basketball team laid a particularly malodorous stinkbomb of their own yesterday in Seattle. After beating an NCAA tournament-worthy UC-Santa Barbara team Friday at Hec Ed, the Huskies got waylaid 93-72 by the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.South Dakota State sank 7-8 three-point shots, shot better than 70 percent from the field overall in the first-half, and led by as much as 30 points. The Dawgs rallied in the second half but had no answer for the Jackrabbits’ Nate Wolters, who torched the home team for 34 points, while collecting seven assists and five rebounds.UW has at least two projected NBA first-rounders (Terrence Ross and Tony Wroten) and two more with pro potential (CJ Wilcox and Aziz N’Diaye) but Wolters made them all look like also-rans. Wroten at least had 23 points but Ross scored just 6 and fouled out with 11 minutes remaining. Wilcox was a ghastly 4-15 shooting on the afternoon. The loss snaps a 32-game nonconference home winning streak for the Huskies. They’re now 5-5 after losing five of their past seven. The question on the mind of every Husky hoops fan is how does a team that nearly upsets Marquette and almost upends Duke in Madison Square Garden suddenly get embarrassed by a team from the Summit League that was 0-3 with double-digit losses against major conference opponents?”I don’t care who we play,” Lorenzo Romar told reporters after the game. “We don’t lose like we did today at home. It’s just unacceptable…unacceptable.”What he said.Elsewhere in college hoops, Gonzaga beat Arizona 71-60 at Key Arena Saturday. Lower Queen Anne was swarming with Zags fans, begging the question: why doesn’t GU play UW in a cross-state rivalry game every year? Both Romar and Gonzaga’s Mark Few have said scheduling such contests are tricky, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that the mighty mid-major from Spokane doesn’t want UW dragging down their RPI ranking come Selection Sunday.Follow The Daily Weekly on Facebook and Twitter.
