Image: Katsushika Hokusai circa 1831, Courtesy of SAMSAM is throwing a grand, grand opening party to celebrate their spiffy, new, double-size space. And very grand indeed it will be. SAM will open its doors for 35 hours straight (from 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 6) and this party offers a chance to get a FREE look at the new spaces (all floors) as well as some of the new acquisitions.Take a peek at the tumbling exploding cars in the lobby, as well as a video of what appears to be another white, Ford Taurus setting off explosions in Times Square. You’ll also get a look at the African art, which has been installed anew, in ways that make the masks and costumes seem less like artifacts, and more like objects with a cultural history to tell. Your legs will cast shadows on a screen of tribal dancers, and the high-tech tricks of some of the installations (I don’t want to ruin the surprise) will entertain and amaze you. Also on the agenda: The Tallboys will perform some rollicking, tap-dancing old time music; Fankick! will get their playful, sexy, 80’s-inspired dance moves on, and the famously fantastic Garfield High School Jazz Band will also perform. And, best of all, the museum will be open into the wee hours. All the better to check out the African masks when they might appear a bit more ominous, and visit the supposedly haunted Hollow Log Coffins.
