I was opposed to the bag tax from the moment it passed the City Council, all the way until it got trampled at the polls Tuesday. I didn’t oppose the measure because its megabucks chemical industry opponents dumped over a million dollars into the race, even though those megabucks chemical industry opponents are responsible for getting the measure on the ballot in the first place. I opposed the bag tax because, in my opinion, it overreached a bit (but a very important bit at that).I use paper bags not just for groceries, but for things around the house — most prominently, to store my recyclables before I take them out to the big green bin that goes curbside each week. Tons of people do the same, and I’m betting the reason why tons of people opposed the bag tax was it included paper bags. Had the tax/fee been limited to plastic bags, I’d have supported it. Simple as that.
