Get your mind out of the gutter! We’re talking about the good old-fashioned, cool-it on-the-windowsill kind. Though bags of frozen berries can be found in supermarkets year-round, there’s nothing better than homemade pie produced from fresh, handpicked berries. Living in the Northwest, we’re home to the landscaper’s nightmare but pie baker’s dream: wild blackberry bushes. The thorny, tangled branches yield the succulent, deep purple gems in late summer all over town. But the best, most scenic spot to stain your fingers is Magnolia’s Discovery Park. If the beautiful beach, breathtaking views of Puget Sound, and sand dunes prove too distracting to fill your bucket, the U District-to-Fremont stretch of the Burke-Gilman yields quite the harvest as well. Make sure to wash them thoroughly, though; no one likes dirt in their pie.—Aja Pecknold 3801 W. Government Way, 386-4236.
