Comments (3)Last Night: Mudhoney + No Age @ Free Yr Radio EventPosted July 24 at 9:45 am by Brian J BarrWho: Mudhoney + No AgeWhere: KEXP Parking LotWhen: Wednesday, July 23SW contributor Travis Ritter put it best last night: aEœItaE™s like SXSW here.aE His was a spot-on observation. There we were, standing in a parking lot, sun shining down, hipsters standing sloped-shouldered, waiting for a couple noisy bands to play underneath a makeshift tent. All around us were marketing materials for Toyota and GOOD magazine. The Ice Cream Man was handing out free treats. The only thing missing, I guessed, was a tamale or barbeque stand. (That, and the stiflingly thick humidity that makes Texas unbearable to a rain-worshipper like me. Last night was actually perfect here, weather-wise, in my opinion.)Last nightaE™s event was part of the Free Yr Radio campaign (brainchild of local marketing whiz Kerry Murphy, I learned). The deal here is that Free Yr Radio raises awareness and some funds for independent radio stations, one of them being KEXP (ever heard of them?). Across the country, these events are normally held as in-stores at Urban Outfitters, but because weaE™re so awesome in Seattle (right?), we get to watch No Age and Mudhoney outdoors as the sun is setting behind the Space Needle. And what two better bands to help promote indie radio than No Age and Mudhoney? ItaE™s highly unlikely youaE™d ever hear either one on a commercial station! No Age plowed through their fuzzy set and it was a pure joy to watch guitarist Randy Randall, dressed in his awesome flannel, hop up on top of his amps and promptly hop back off while whipping his curly hair back and forth. A group of kids in the front flipped out through the entire set as Dean Spunt flatly whined the song lyrics and pounded out those propulsive drum riffs of his. Live, their music came across as representative of their record. Waves of fuzz ebbed and flowed, eventually erupting into a grimy fits of pop-punk. Spunt even took a moment to call out and thank soon-to-be-former Sub Pop publicist Steve Manning (after nine years at the label, Manning is leaving to embark on a globe-trotting aEœmanventureaE. Whether heaE™ll wear pants while doing so is up-for-debate).Up next was the great Mudhoney. As our web editor Chris Kornelis pointed out, weaE™ve been devoting a lot of press to our local aEœgrunge iconsaE lately. ItaE™s true. IaE™ve seen more Mudhoney shows in the last two months than I have in my five years of living here. But lately the band has been at the top of its game, I swear. Mark Arm, free of guitar, now prowls the stage. Half the time he scowls, cutting his hawkish glare at the crowd, while the rest of the time, he rolls his eyes in the back of his head like some of Renfield-ish maniac. They opened with aEœThe Money Will Roll Right InaE, a timeless classic, before tearing into aEœIaE™m NowaE and the title track off their latest ripper The Lucky Ones. But the show was plagued midway through when the P.A. system shitted out on us. The band wasnaE™t really aware of this, so they kept grinding their way through aEœYou Got ItaE and aEœSuck You DryaE. To the audience, it sounded like the song was being played inside a wool sock, all muffled and thick with bass. Once they figured it out, though, they killed time with some smokin’ cool blues jamming. Bassist Guy Maddison even entertained some questions from the kids in front (one of which was apparently aEœWhereaE™d the name Mudhoney come from?aE because I heard Maddison respond: aEœItaE™s from a Russ Meyer film.aE) But the tech guys mustaE™ve found the plug for the sound system, because they got it re-charged in time for the band to thrash out aEœTomorrow Hit TodayaE, aEœIn and Out of GraceaE, and aEœTouch Me IaE™m SickaE. It occurred to me, thoughaE”standing there as the band awkwardly killed time waiting for shit to be fixedaE”Mudhoney really does need a wall socket to come alive.Topics: ReviewsPermalink

Adam DuritzPosted July 24 at 4:08 pm by Mike Seelyroderickstache.jpgSure, they sound alike at times, but one’s a high-class whore and the other’ll cost you ten-bucks-a-throw, writes SW contributor Ben Westhoff in Crawdaddy. You can probably figure out whose services Westhoff prefers, but the piece is still well worth a read.Topics: John Roderick: Reverb ResidencyPermalink

Comments (0)Last Night: Emmylou Harris at Woodland Park ZooPosted July 25 at 10:14 am by Sara BricknerIMG_8847.JPGThose of you who’ve ever attended a show at the zoo probably already knew what I didn’t: if you want to get a seat where you can actually pay attention to the music, you must 1) show up really early and stand in line before the doors open and 2) avoid Kid Hill at all costs, which is a little incline in the very back where all the bitties congregate to play, aka run around shrieking. The show started before six, and Emmylou was on by 6:45, which makes me think that either the people camped out in the front don’t have day jobs or they took time off from work, which is great for those in positions with the flexibility to do that, but all us Joe ‘n Jane shmoes got relegated to the back with the families. And while I think it’s great that these parents are trying to expose their children to one of the greatest country vocalists ever to grace American music, I’m not sure that the 3-10 year old crowd really benefited from the whole experience as much as their noisy presence detracted from everyone else’s.Whining aside, Emmylou put on an excellent show, it was a nice evening for sitting outside, and it would’ve been tough to come up with a better set list than the one we heard. She played a few new tracks from her latest record, All I Intended To Be, but she also regaled us with plenty of old standbys like Red Dirt Girl, the late, great Gram Parsons’ Return of the Grievous Angel, If I Could Only Win Your Love and the closer, Two More Bottles of Wine. The sound system, at least from where we were, wasn’t doing her any favors, but I’m not worried that I’ll never see her sing live again, because Emmylou assured us that she’s not done performing even ifaE” as she explainedaE” some chodelier fans of hers have suggested that she retire. DON’T DO IT, EMMYLOU! But next time you come to Seattle, couldja maybe play a 21+ show to appease the childless, soul-less ogres like myself? Or at least somewhere with reserved seats? Just saying.More photos courtesy of li’l scoop after the jump!Continue reading Last Night: Emmylou Harris at Woodland Park ZooTopics: The Morning AfterPermalink

Comments (0)Meet Me in the Dollar BinPosted July 25 at 1:27 pm by Hannah LevinSonic Boom in Ballard is having a sidewalk sale at the moment, presumably to take advantage of the increased foot traffic from SeafoodFest this weekend.Dollar bins are curious places in the land of discounted records; sure, there’s bound to be an excess of later-era R.E.M. and Jesus Jones, but it can also be an opportunity to unearth some gems that were somehow deemed unworthy of, say, a $5 sticker. Two cases in point, both snagged yesterday at said sale:tar.jpgOver and Out, by Tar, Touch & Go Recordscosmicpsychos.jpgSelf Totaled, by Cosmic Psychos, Amphetamine Reptile RecordsThe sale is going on all weekend, so stop on by and maybe you’ll get lucky too.Topics: Wax WatchPermalink

Comments (0)Like Rosie O’Donnell At A Bisexual Bridal ShowerPosted July 25 at 1:52 pm by Mike SeelyThis vid is pretty fucking cruel, but anyway…it’s probably not the best idea to spit homophobic lyrics when you’re a retarded, crosseyed freestyle rapper (or even if you’re not), but my man Eli gets big ups for the Rosie line, which is simply classic.Topics: Elsewhere on the WebPermalink

Comments (0)Shows That Will Be Overshadowed By Capitol Hill Block PartyPosted July 25 at 2:45 pm by Sara BricknerUnfortunate timing, guys! Especially since I, for one, am going to Block Party. But if you don’t feel like braving the raucous mob of scenesters at Capitol Hill Block Party, here are a few more laid-back alternatives worthy of your considerationwatsontwins2.jpgThe Watson Twins courtesy of Michael Alan GoldbergTONIGHT:Nicole Atkins & the Sea at Triple Door Mainstage10 p.m., $17 adv, $20 dos.According to Ma’chell D-L, Nicole Atkins is possibly the next Amy Winehouse. Let’s hope she doesn’t follow in Winehouse’s footsteps….that is, turn into an emaciated crack addict with emphysema and a severe case of the crazies. The Watson Twins, Tim Fite, Jen Wood at Tractor Tavern9 p.m., $10 adv, $12 dos.Pretty ballads for you, with folk songstress Jen Wood opening! What more could you want?SATURDAY:Little Pieces at Easy Street Records in West Seattle9:30 p.m., $5, 21+ (like all after-hours shows there)I went to see Little Pieces at Re-Bar the very week I moved to Seattle, and I say to you, Herman Jolly’s sunny, sparkly new pop band is not to be ignored. The goddamn Melvins at Showbox at the Market.8 p.m., $20 adv, $22 dos.Permalink
Comments (1)Don’t Forget…The Saturday Knights Will Eat A Buttload Of Donuts TomorrowPosted July 25 at 2:51 pm by Brian J Barrdonuts.jpgRemember how last year, around the time the Saturday Knights released their killer EP, they had a donut eating contest at Silver Platters in Queen Anne. They’re doing it again this year at Top Pot. Plus they’ll be performing songs from their smash LP, Mingle (best record released by a local band this year, no question). And the whole affair will be hosted by none other than Nancy Guppy, which those kids who run Light in the Attic are obviously over-joyed about. Quoth LITA: NANCY FUCKING GUPPYguppy.jpgAlso…SW contributor and Sonic Boom record slinger Travis Ritter will even be joining in an attempt to eat a shitload of donuts as well. He said he prepared earlier this week by watching this…Topics: HappeningsPermalink

Comments (0)Saturday: Breakfast at PembertonPosted July 26 at 12:57 pm by Chris Kornelispembsat1.jpgIt is still uncomfortably dusty out here. All photos by Chris Kornelis. The last time I went to a concert in Canada, my car was towed to a lot in the red light district, I had to pay a fee, and I was issued a parking ticket. That was in 2002, and I’ve always had something of a chip on my shoulder toward the country where I got dinged for leaving my car in temporary parking. (Can anybody explain to me what temporary parking means???) Yesterday I decided it’s time for me to get over myself. We’ve been on-site for almost 18 hours and we haven’t met a single other American (other than journalists). We’ve been offered countless joints, bottles and other festival condiments, and I’m further humbled by the local hospitality every hour. The Canadians have come from all over. Last night, no sooner had we thrown meat on the grill, we were joined by a handful of our neighbors. Many came in from Vancouver. One kid took the Greyhound for a day and a half from Winnipeg.pembsat2.jpgThe view from our camp site this morning.Continue reading Saturday: Breakfast at PembertonPermalink
