EVERETT — Six months after the fatal shooting of a Seattle man, family and friends took to the Snohomish County Courthouse on Monday to demand an arrest in his killing.
Dustyn Hunt-Bagby, 21, a musician who went by the name PrettyBoi Nabii, was at his girlfriend’s house in the 10600 block of 32nd Drive SE near the Silver Lake area. He and the girlfriend’s father, 47, got into a physical altercation on that February night, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. The older man reportedly shot Hunt-Bagby in the chest, once, killing him.
So far, the shooter has not been arrested.
“Nothing’s happened,” said Lisa Ledbetter, Hunt-Bagby’s mother. “… We just kind of feel like it’s being swept under the rug.”
Authorities said they’re actively investigating the case.
Over 40 people chanted and waved signs for hours at the courthouse Monday. The demonstration took place days after Hunt-Bagby’s girlfriend, Lauryn Heller, who is the alleged shooter’s daughter, gave her side of the story in an emotional video posted on YouTube.
In the video, she said she had invited Hunt-Bagby over on Feb. 25. They were drinking wine and watching movies when she got a text from her father, saying Hunt-Bagby needed to leave by 10:30 p.m.
She said she tried hiding him under her bed and left the house, to trick her father. She’s done it before, she said, and she didn’t think anything would happen.
As she waited by the window, she saw the light turn on and heard people yelling, she said. She ran inside.
“I saw my dad standing there with a gun, and I jumped in front of him,” she said in the video, “because I thought if he saw me, maybe he’d put it down and stop.”
According to her account, they were trying to leave when her father grabbed Hunt-Bagby and shot him. She said there was no reason to believe her father acted in self-defense.
Hunt-Bagby’s family members said Monday they don’t believe sheriff’s detectives are taking Heller’s account seriously.
Ledbetter described her son as peaceful and loving. She said it was “confusing to everyone” that he was described as an aggressor in the shooting.
The sheriff’s office had little new information to provide on Monday.
“The case is still under investigation and no arrests have been made at this time,” sheriff’s spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe wrote in an email.
She said detectives are waiting for evidence to be processed by a crime lab.
Detectives expect to send the investigation to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office by the end of the year for review and referral of any possible criminal charges, O’Keefe said.
