Even Jared thinks the time doesn’t match the crime.Three-strike laws make sense for some crimes. But in certain cases they’re just plain goofy.Take the case of Cheryl Lidel, for example. The 50-year-old is no angel. She has two priors dating back to 1983 for first-degree robbery. But she’s also probably not worthy of the Hannibal Lecter treatment. On February 14th, Lidel allegedly put a Subway cashier in a headlock, threatened to shoot her if she called police and ran off with $370 cash. Thanks to an eyewitness, cops quickly caught up with Lidel and arrested her. She still had the stolen loot in her pants pocket. But no gun was found. Leading officers to believe she was just bluffing the shooting threat. The King County prosecutor handling Lidel’s case says the robbery could put her away for life. And thanks to Washington’s strict three-strikes policy, she’s already managed to secure a bail five times higher than the one that couldn’t keep cop-killer Maurice Clemmons from getting out and murdering four Lakewood officers in November. There is no right or wrong here. The lawyer is just doing her job, using the law as written as leverage in her case. And Lidel clearly doesn’t have much respect for the rules. But no matter how little your heart bleeds for repeat offenders like her, it’s hard to imagine anyone thinking a life sentence, and the taxpayer costs associated with it, is the appropriate outcome for an old lady lifting some cash.
