Don’t bogart that joint, my friend, pass it over to Portland, Maine.

Last night, while we were electing a new mayor, the people of Maine’s largest city overwhelming said yes to recreational marijuana, thereby becoming the first East Coast City to give a green light to smoking pot for fun – at least for residents 21 and older. The measure, titled Question 1, passed with 70 percent of the vote.

Portland, where one can now possess up to 2.5 ounces of weed – but can’t stand on a street corner and sell it – now joins Washington and Colorado as the only places where recreational pot use is legal.

Medical marijuana is already legal in Maine, and the Portland referendum is seen as largely symbolic, as it does not override state or federal laws. But, undoubtedly, the victory will likely spark further efforts to legalize recreational marijuana in the Pine Tree state, just as it happened here and in Colorado in November 2012.

“Most Portlanders, like most Americans, are fed up with our nation’s failed marijuana prohibition laws,” said David Boyer of the Marijuana Policy Project, a marijuana advocacy group. “We applaud Portland voters for adopting a smarter marijuana policy, and we look forward to working with city officials to ensure it is implemented.”

Also looking forward to seeing it fully implementation is Nabisco, the maker of Oreo cookies.
