Didn’t we just celebrate Earth Day?On a really nice day, Alki is suddenly transformed into Laguna Beach, Calif. Hot cars roll slowly past the stretch of shops honking at hot women. Roller blades and beach cruisers appear on the path. Everyone with a canine drives down to run their dog along the sparkling Puget Sound water. So perhaps it’s because Alki feels like La La Land that we normally-Earth-loving Seattleites acted like self-absorbed Hollywood starlets this weekend–at least so far as our refuse was concerned. West Seattle Blog
posted the above photo of cups and what looks to be squished ketchup packets strewn out well beyond the garbage cans.Over at Blubberblog, one of the Seal Sitters (a group of seal lovers that hang out with pups sunning on the beach to keep them safe from dogs and other hazards) describes seeing gulls picking through “paper plates smeared with ketchup and mustard, cups, plastic bags, plastic forks, plastic coke bottles” on an early morning walk.Part of the problem was that on the Friday before the weekend, Seattle park maintenance crews took an unpaid day off as part of last year’s attempt to resolve the city’s budget shortfall. So the garbage cans quickly filled. But as one WSB reader notes, if you can’t find a place to pitch your trash–you could always just pack it out and toss it at home. Just a thought.
