Dance picks

CENTERCIRCLESPIN

Local break-dance crews Circle of Fire and Massive Monkeys, featured in this spring’s Lords of the Floor program, are joined by Dance Brooms and a host of other area dancers for a weekend of popping and locking. Break dancing draws its influences from the air, so expect to see anything, from weight lifting power moves to lindy hop lifts and spins. Center House. 12:30-6:30 p.m.; four 45-minute sets. Sat. Sept. 1-Mon. Sept. 3.

BETTERBISCUIT DANCE

Alex Martin and Freya Wormus have been making dances, for themselves and others, that combine a fine kinetic sense with evocative visual images. The physicality is both tender and exuberant—whether in “twosome,” their exploration of the duet form, or the pageantlike “Fable.” Brn Shoes Bagley Wright Theater. 8:45 p.m. Sat. Sept. 1; 1 p.m. Sun. Sept. 2.

LILY CAI CHINESE DANCE COMPANY

Sometimes Chinese opera seems like a glorious cacophony, with gods and mortals locked in an eternal high drama. Lily Cai, former principal dancer with the Shanghai Opera House, combines these elements with modern dance and ballet to create a fusion style that draws as much from traditional dances as contemporary multimedia work. Brn Shoes Bagley Wright Theater. 5 p.m. Sat. Sept. 1; 5 p.m. Sun. Sept. 2. Special kids program at Bagley Wright Theater Lawn. 2 p.m. Sat. Sept. 1.

WOFA

The musicians and dancers of WOFA are moving away from the old caricatures of African dance toward a contemporary interpretation of traditional movement and rhythms that reflects modern life in Guinea, West Africa. Funky Kingston Rhythm Stage. 4:45 p.m. Mon. Sept. 3.

PROJECT BANDALOOP

After their other Bumbershoot appearances—like dancing while dangling off the Space Needle—not to mention events on canyon walls and other extra-tall places, these performances in a normal theater might seem, well, normal. Don’t be deceived, though. This group of high-flying dancers will find a way to make the Bagley Wright Theater into a natural wonder. Brn Shoes Bagley Wright Theater. Noon-12:30 p.m. Sun. Sept. 2; 5:45-6:30 p.m. Mon. Sept. 3.
