Bruce Barcott, a writer and editor at this paper during the ’90s, is today a contributor to The New York Times (among other publications) and the author, most recently, of The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw: One Woman’s Fight to Save the World’s Most Beautiful Bird. Having recently returned to the Northwest after a few years of teaching at the University of Colorado, he was just announced the winner of a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. He’s in good company; others on this year’s list include novelist Chris Abani, Kelly Reichardt (the Portland director of Wendy and Lucy) and Linda Wordeman, a professor of physiology and biophysics at the UW School of Medicine.
