Ben Fisher and Tony Kevin Jr., Don’t Tell Mama EP (out now, self-released, benfishertonykevinjr.bandcamp.com): Beloved busker Ben Fisher and collaborator Tony Kevin Jr. pair heartfelt songs with mellow folk harmonies laced around wispy pedal steel guitar as they alternate between writing and performing on each track. Mudhoney, Vanishing Point (out now, Sub Pop Records, subpop.com/artists/mudhoney): Despite the band’s advancing years, its ninth album reels with nostalgia; opening track “Slipping Away” jumps headfirst into youthful exuberance. With Steve Turner’s wild soloing and Dan Peters’ intense drum work, these dudes show no signs of slowing. PADMA NOLT

We Are Loud Whispers,

Suchness (out now, Hardly Art, hardlyart.com/weareloudwhispers.html). As the band’s name implies, this debut LP has a dreamlike feeling courtesy of Sonya Westcott’s breathy vocals (you may remember that tone from the gone-too-soon indie-pop duo Arthur & Yu) and Ayumu Haitani’s chilled-out electronic soundtrack. That the recording was assembled via e-mail and the two have not met in person since 2007 when Arthur & Yu toured Japan adds more mystery to its ambient qualities. Their homes might be far apart, but Haitani’s playful, spacey synths—nicely done on the Stereolab-esque “You Surround”—sound perfectly at home next to Westcott’s wispy pipes. GWENDOLYN ELLIOTT
