Because they can determine the fate of lesser mortals with a mere flick of their gavel-supporting wrists, judges are generally assumed to hold themselves to a higher standard. A standard apparently not met by Tumwater Municipal Court judge John Lyman. On Saturday afternoon, a witness at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course watched as the 65-year-old Lyman reportedly backed his SUV into an empty parked car. The witness took down Lyman’s license plate number and then called the police.A few minutes later, another call came into 911. This time it was a fellow driver who said he’d just been hit by Lyman’s car in an intersection. “He was staggering a bit,” the driver told King 5, “and I smelled alcohol on his breath.”The driver then followed Lyman to his home in Olympia, where police took him into custody. Two hours after the hit-and-runs the judge blew a .13 into a breathalyzer, still well above the legal limit. But police have yet to charge Lyman. And he was never jailed because troopers say he cooperated with them the whole time.Lyman’s judgeship comes courtesy of a mayoral-appointment. And though he’s only accused, not charged, Tumwater’s mayor has reportedly asked Lyman to take a one-week breather while things get sorted out.Below, check out Lyman’s reaction when a reporter tried to interview him at his home. Nothing says “no comment” like closing an automatic garage door.
